I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is still water leaking, turn off the isolating valve to the appliance or fixture if you can, or go immediately to the main valve for your property. If you are unable to find the water valve to turn off, then you may want to try turning on all the cold water taps inside and outside your house to depressurise the system and reduce the leak.

Once that’s done, give our plumber a ring, no matter what the day or time is. We will be there promptly to fix the leak.

While you are waiting, clear away any significant possessions from the area, and mop up any water or position a bucket to catch the drips. If you have turned the mains water off, also switch off the hot water heating as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!
