I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is leaking, turn the water off at the nearest access point or at the mains valve outside. If you cannot locate the water main shutoff valve or a tap to the appliance, then turn on the cold faucets inside and out to depressurise the pipework and minimise the leak.

Once that is sorted, give our team a ring, no matter what the day or time is. We’ll be with you promptly to fix the leak.

While waiting for the plumber to arrive, remove any significant possessions close to the leak, and mop up any water or place a container to catch any drips. If you’ve turned the mains water off, also switch off the hot water heating as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
