I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is leaking, turn the water off at the nearest location or at the mains tap outside. If you can’t locate the water main valve or a tap to the appliance, then turn on all the cold taps inside and out to depressurise the pipework and reduce the leak.

Once that’s sorted, give our team a ring, whatever the day or time is. We’ll be there shortly to resolve the problem.

While waiting for our emergency plumber, clear away any important items, clean up any water, and place a bucket to catch any drips. You should also turn off the hot water heating if the main water is turned off.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
