I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is water still leaking, turn off the service valve to the appliance or fixture if possible, or go immediately to the main water valve for your home. If you are unable to find the water valve to turn off, then you can try turning on all the cold water taps inside and outside the residence to depressurise the pipework and reduce the leak.

Once you have stopped the problem from growing, give our emergency plumber a ring, at any time of the day or night. We’ll be there quickly to resolve the issue.

While waiting, clear away any important things close to the leak, and mop up any water or position a container to catch the drips. If you’ve turned the mains water off, switch off the hot water heating as well.
