I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is water still leaking, turn off the tap to the appliance or fixture if you can, or go straight to the main valve for your home. If you’re unable to locate the tap to turn off, then you may want to try turning on all the cold taps inside and outside your residence to depressurise the system and minimise the leak.

Now give our on call plumbers a ring, any time of the day or night. We’ll be at your place as soon as possible to save the day.

While you are waiting for the plumber to arrive, clear away any important items from the area, and clean up any water or put a bucket to catch any drips. If you turned the mains water off, switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don�t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, a lot of appliances and fixtures have their own isolating taps also.
