I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is leaking, turn the water off at the nearest valve and then at the mains valve outside. If you cannot find the main valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on the cold taps inside and out to help depressurise the system and minimise the leak.

Once that is done, give our plumber a ring, whatever the day or time is. We will be there shortly to fix the leak.

While waiting for the plumber to arrive, remove any significant items close to the leak, and wipe up any water or place a bucket to catch the drips. If you turned the mains water off, switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don�t know where the main water shutoff valve is!
