I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is water still leaking, turn off the service valve to the appliance or fixture if you can, or go straight to the main shutoff valve for your home. If you are unable to locate a tap to turn off, then you can try turning on all the cold taps inside and outside the house to depressurise the pipework and reduce the leak.

Once that is done, give our team a ring, no matter what the day or time is. We’ll be there rapidly to fix the leak.

While you are waiting for the plumber to arrive, remove any important things from the area, and mop up any water or position a bucket to catch the drips. If you have turned the mains water off, also switch off the hot water heating as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
