I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is water still leaking, turn off the tap to the appliance or fixture if you can, or go straight to the main water valve for your home. If you are unable to locate the main valve to turn off, then you can try turning on all the cold taps inside and outside the house to depressurise the system and reduce the leak.

Once that’s done, give our team a ring, whatever the day or time is. We will be there rapidly to get things sorted.

While waiting for our emergency plumber, remove any important things, wipe up any water, and place a container to catch any drips. You should also switch off the hot water heating if the main water is turned off.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
