I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is still leaking, turn off the water at the nearest access point or at the mains tap outside. If you cannot locate the main isolation valve or a tap to the appliance, then turn on the cold taps inside and out to help depressurise the household pipework and minimise the leak.

Once that’s done, give our plumber a ring, whatever the day or time is. We’ll be with you shortly to get things sorted.

While you are waiting, clear away any important items from the area, and clean up any water or put a bucket to catch the drips. If you’ve turned the mains water off, also switch off the hot water heating as well.
