I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is leaking, turn the water off at the nearest isolating valve and then at the mains tap outside. If you can’t find the water main isolation valve or a tap to the appliance, then turn on all the cold faucets inside and out to help depressurise the system and reduce the leak.

Once that is done, give our plumber a call, no matter what the day or time is. We will be with you shortly to get things sorted.

While you wait, begin wiping up any water, position a bucket to catch any drips, and clear away significant things from the area. If the mains water is turned off, also switch off the heating for the hot water.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
