I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is leaking, turn the water off at the nearest isolating valve or at the mains tap outside. If you cannot locate the main isolation valve or a tap to the appliance, then turn on all the cold faucets inside and out to help depressurise the system and minimise the leak.

While you wait for our emergency plumber, clear away any important things, wipe up any water, and put a bucket to catch any drips. You should also turn off the hot water heating if the main water is turned off.

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
