I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is still water leaking, turn off the isolating valve to the appliance or fixture if you can, or go immediately to the main shutoff valve for your property. If you are unable to locate a tap to turn off, then you can try turning on all the cold taps inside and outside your home to depressurise the system and reduce the leak.

Once you have stopped the diaster from growing, give our emergency plumber a call, any time of the day or night. We’ll be there rapidly to resolve the problem.

While waiting for the plumber to arrive, clear away any significant possessions close to the leak, and wipe up any water or place a container to catch any drips. If you’ve turned the mains water off, switch off the heating for the hot water as well.
