I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

A lot of appliances and fixtures have isolating valves that you can turn off. For example, the toilet will have a valve below or beside the cistern. If you cannot locate a tap, or that does not stop the leak, then turn off the mains water tap to stop all water to the house.

In the meantime, start cleaning up any water, position a bucket to catch any drips, and clear away significant items from the affected area. If the property water is turned off, then also switch off the heating for the hot water.
