I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

A lot of appliances and fixtures have isolating valves that you can turn off. For example, the toilet will have a valve below or beside the cistern. If you cannot locate a tap, or that doesn’t stop the leak, then turn off the mains shutoff valve to cut off all the water to your property.
