I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is water still leaking, turn off the isolating valve to the appliance or fixture if possible, or go straight to the main water shutoff valve for your property. If you’re unable to find the main valve to turn off, then you could try turning on all the cold water taps inside and outside your residence to depressurise the system and minimise the leak.

In the meantime, start mopping up any water, position a container to catch drips, and clear away valuable items from the area. If the mains water is turned off, also switch off the heating for the hot water.
