I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is leaking, turn the water off at the nearest location or at the mains valve outside. If you cannot find the water main isolation valve or a tap to the appliance, then turn on all the cold taps inside and out to help depressurise the pipework and minimise the leak.

Now give our on call plumbers a ring, any time of the day or night. We’ll be there as soon as we can to save the day.

While waiting for our emergency plumber, clear away any important things, clean up any water, and put a bucket to catch drips. You should also turn off the hot water heating if the main water is turned off.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, a lot of appliances and fixtures have their own isolating taps as well.

Find a piece of string of some type, and knot it around the tap aerator so that it dangles down to the base of the skink or basin. The drips will run along the twine and flow off quietly.
