I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is still leaking, turn the water off at the nearest valve or at the mains tap outside. If you cannot find the main valve or a tap to the appliance, then turn on the cold faucets inside and out to help depressurise the household pipework and minimise the leak.

While waiting for the plumber to arrive, remove any significant possessions close to the leak, and clean up any water or position a bucket to catch the drips. If you’ve turned the mains water off, also switch off the heating for the hot water as well.
