I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is leaking, turn off the water at the nearest isolating valve and then at the mains valve outside. If you can’t find the main isolation valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on all the cold faucets inside and out to depressurise the system and minimise the leak.

Now give our on call plumbers a ring, any hour day or night. We’ll be there as soon as we can to resolve the problem.

While you wait for our emergency plumber, remove any important items, wipe up any water, and place a bucket to catch any drips. You should also switch off the hot water heating if the main water is turned off.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, a lot of appliances and fixtures have their own isolating taps as well.
